I have only one window, in the corner facing south. Lots of wall space, which will accommodate a design wall, and all my tables and chests, plus a sofa and cozy chair for knitting.
While a glamorous bathroom was offered to us, with flashy shower tile and separate tub, we opted for function instead. Originally the laundry pair was in the pantry! which is adjacent to the kitchen. Nope, not for me. So I moved them to the bathroom and I'll have space for a large folding table, and a chest for linens.
The breakfast nook? No way! This is the secluded TV room/Dave's guitar practice space. (Sound proofing included). French doors lead onto the screened in porch, for the pugs! There will be stairs off the porch to a concrete parking pad, where the garbage bins might go, or the grill, or my car when it needs washing. All the homes have their garages facing each other, with a lovely alley between. So city.
Both Dave and I were born in Chicago and can remember alleys, with incinerators out back. People recycled in an entirely different way. ha!
Hi Melody- have you considered turning one of your tub/shower combos into a walk-in shower? I have four aging parents, including my dad who has Parkinson's, and that step into the tub has been very prohibitive. Just a thought..... Joan
ReplyDeleteI agree. After my husband's by pass surgery we had to rethink a number of "normal" items in the bathroom (chair height toilets with room for wheelchair in and out). Wider doorways. A seat in the walk in shower to transition to from wheelchair. Going for kitchen height bathroom vanities also. Someone is going to be using a walker or wheelchair. Eventually. Neighbor had knee replacement and the bathroom was the biggest obstacle for her.

ReplyDeleteHave you considered tile for your studio floor? That's what I have - so easy to clean up the paints spills, etc.! One townhome we had, I used the living room for my sewing studio. When it came time to sell, we switched the tiny family room into a tiny studio and made the LR a true living room again.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comments above - a walk in shower with a seat is far preferable to any other type. We have one small step over threshold into ours and that may become too much of a problem later... Tall toilet seats are a must, of course. and different heights for baths and kitchens, if possible, are nice. Someone in a wheel chair will appreciate being able to chop veggies at a low counter top or pull out bread-board.

Yes, I agree with all the comments above, too. Also, a wide enough hall-way to accommodate a wheel chair if ever need be. It's your house, your money and you should build and live the way that makes you happy. When I'm dead and gone the next people who own my house can do whatever THEY want to do with it. Later we'll want pictures. I'm so excited for you.
ReplyDeleteI would see if the door between the Studio and bathroom could be made sliding (into the wall) as otherwise you have to open door to bathroom, then close it to open the toilet door. ANd agree about a walk in shower, on the plus side they are easier to clean too!

ReplyDeleteLovely plans, Melody. I agree with the comments about the shower though. We had to makeover the bathroom in our home some years ago, and chose a walk in shower as my husband has bad arthritis and I do too, and it's super. It would accommodate a chair, and be roomy enough for a caregiver to be in there too. The grab-rail I put in is used by me every day. I keep a small stool in there which is so useful for foot-scrubbing etc. It's super easy to clean, and t was the Best thing I ever did!!
