Unexpected Piecing

Well, so much for my plan...I opened my scrap boxes and started to piece bits and found a bunch of previously pieced semi-blocks and before long I was making improv sections. There was also a large previously made strip set, which I will incorporate totally now.
I admit I prefer improv piecing over planned work, so this is feeling like just what I want to be doing. I have some really nice scraps to use up and that is the goal.
Instead of making a quilted project, I plan on making this a lined coverlet so I can actually use it on the bed. It is too warm to sleep with two dogs for a real quilt during the warm months.

  1. I'm interested in the idea of a pieced coverlet with just a lining--actually, I'm thinking of making a tablecloth this way. Do you have any tips for the lining? I was planning to do a pillowcase binding. Not sure if I'll need to sew again around the outside edge, or tack the layers together at places through the quilt. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  2. what a yummy situation you are in. i love to let the moment be open to ideas with material or strings or blocks to lead the way.what speaks to the chunk next to it.So that freedom of juxtaposition and trust keeps me interested in the day ahead!

  4. I am with you Melody; I prefer improv piecing also. I call it "busy work"; like when I just want to sew with no plan in mind. Very therapeutic.
