Planning Ahead

I am obsessing about a garden for the new house. Here's where we stand. The porch columns and stairs are in and the dotted lines are the sidewalks and parkway. The space leftover is the only area I have for a garden. I want hope to have two brick walled rectangular boxes using the same whitewashed brick as the house has. The boxes needs to be about 6-8 courses high, aiming close to 16", because again we have no soil, only compacted clay.

Here's my hilarious photo-shopped rendition of the proposed garden space. I am intending to show that there is a gap between the house/porch and the edge of the beds. Also another gap between the walkway from the stairs to the front walk. This is access space for maneuvering around the raised walls. The space behind the beds in front of the house will be a brick walkway, again, hopefully. I will put my many blue pots there, and whatever are leftover can go on the porch itself.
If this were November I wouldn't be so anxious about doing a garden, but it is after all SPRING and I get so lustful about planting stuff at this time of year.
Speaking of gardens, look who moved into our redbud tree...

  1. Melody, I did a quick Photoshop rendering of what the beds might look like. If you are interested, let me know how to get the jpg to you. jwindsor312@gmail.com

  2. I know even with a small (for you!) garden, it will be the jewel of the neighborhood! And I love the frog (or is it a toad?)! We don't have them here... just lizards and other prairie critters.

  3. Golly - in my ignorance I thought it would be far too hot for toads/frogs where you are? Where do they go for moisture?

  4. I really enjoy your updates on the house! It's almost like it's my house coming along. 8-) I can hardly wait to see your plantings. Mr. Toad/Frog is amazing. I've never seen a white one before. Keep sending those updates!

  5. Speaking as someone of the same vintage, i hope you have considered hand rails and ramps at the front elevation.....we speak from experience. This needs to be addressed at the building stage.

  9. I "second" Marie's suggestion. We had handrails put in the showers, so we were sure they would be waterproof - rather than risk problems if one was put in badly later. It is remarkably useful, even though we fortunately don't need it yet. I'm so looking forward to seeing you settled in. You are such a clever decorator.

  10. Is that an invasive Cuban tree frog? Hope not, didn't think they could survive your cold winters! They are really bad in S.FL they eat all our native green tree frogs! And the mess they leave behind is really gross.....
