It's been such a long time since I quilted a larger quilt. Once I discovered Quilt As You Go, I would only quilt sections and then join them after quilting and never have to work on a whole quilt at once.
But then I made a dozen quilt tops thinking I would just leave them for my ancestors to quilt (!) and put them in a box. Now I have the urge to quilt them. I was inspired by the fabulous quilts made by my friends and had to join in the fun. But oooooooooh, was I out of practice!!! As mentioned in a previous post, I made every rookie mistake in the book, and just kept on quilting, removing messes and re-quilting over again. When I finally came near the finish line I realized that my biggest mistake was using a heavy thread in the bobbin which pulled the heavier needle thread to the back in an ugly visible way. I wound some bobbins with lighter thread and voila! No messes. Yay.
I took advantage of the large sections of open space to practice my old patterns and try out new ideas. Lots of fancy quilting is pinned on Pinterest and I looked there for inspiration, but couldn't make myself mark anything. I have only to square this quilt up and bind it today. Then when next my quilt friends meet, I will have a finished work to share. No looking on the back please!
Beautiful! Melody, please provide the link to your tutorial pages for free motion quilting from the other blog site. I drooled over them long ago, but was not confident enough in my quilting skills to give myself permission to attempt them. You give me such encouragement to just tackle it, embrace it for what it is, and quilt on!
