I Did It!!

I began this diet on June 25th and today I weighed in and lost 30.5 pounds! An average of 10 pounds per month. I am so happy to have decided to take off this weight. All my clothes fit so much better and my knees and feet feel the effect of less Mel walking on them.
Here's what I did;
I used the Loseit.com site to log in what I ate and how many calories were consumed. The program asks for your goal and calculates the calorie budget for your weight loss.
In the beginning I was given about 1400 calories per day and could discount any exercise I did from that total. I walked the dogs twice a day for 15 minutes each.
My choices were simple. I knew to stay away from all breads, pasta, rice etc and wine! and to keep my protein to 4 ounces per meal. But I was in a hurry and ate just two meals a day.
Breakfast was coffee, bran flakes, and almond milk which is only 30 calories for 8 ounces.
Lunch was veggies and 4 ounces of meat. Snack? an apple or peach. That was it  for the day. Less than 600 calories. I was never hungry. Seriously. Without the sugar I didn't experience the highs and lows and could keep on track. And it is the protein that satisfies cravings.  I tried to eat my lunch around 2, and having an apple at 5 helped for the evening.

It amazes me that life has become so simple when it comes to shopping and stocking the pantry. I love to cook, but that is a dangerous to me hobby. My husband makes his own meals because he eats day and night. He has gained weight but isn't the least concerned because he is still a stick.
Now I can make a small roast and it lasts for days. Lots of veggies and salads, and fruit in our house and I discovered a salad dressing that is delicious and very high protein and low calorie.
Mel's Salad Dressing
3 tablespoons fat free Greek Yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
salt, pepper, garlic powder and
one packet of Equal.
Mix it up and drizzle on greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and anything else you like in a salad. Dee-lish!

  2. Congratulations! Sugar is evil-I find if I ever go back to it, it sucks me back in and I crave it again. Better to avoid it forever. After while you learn to crave a good salad and anything with good flavor.

  5. Congratulations!! I need to lose about 30 lbs. and sugar is my worse craving!! I can't even have popcorn at night (we eat 1 meal a day..usually around 12-1pm) without making caramel corn...GGGRRR. Then I'm mad at myself for giving in. I have no willpower :(

  8. Way to go, Melody! Congratulations. I'm going to check out the Loseit.com site. I know without a doubt that my carbs/sugar addiction is the evil culprit. I really don't want it unless it is bread or dessert.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  9. Be careful with that.

I'm a chronic undereater. Two meals a day with a sparse breakfast. Sometimes I don't break over 1100 calories. But if you do that too long, your body goes into starvation mode and starts to cling to every calorie and store them all. That's how I gained weight and why it's hard for me to lose weight.

I used MyFitnessPal.com and it worked fine but it was hard to keep up because I was annoyed with the "you haven't eaten enough" messages. I can't keep it up more than a few months. I do like how many food are already listed so I don't have to do the calculations myself, but I can put it custom food and do the math and it will save the info. It even tells me how much sugar, sodium, etc. I take in as I try to keep my sodium low too. Fitness and food calculations all in one, and there is a phone app.

I really should give it another try. I want to go to Yosemite next year and Europe in 2018. If I were 30 lbs lighter it would make traveling a lot easier.

  10. Congratulations!! You are an inspiration! My doctor is after me to lose weight, but I never last more than a few days on a diet. He said you'll take 4 lbs. of stress off your hips and knees, for every pound of weight lost. The key is to think of it as a healthy life change, rather than a stop-gap measure. Have to remember that!

  11. I know that feeling of feeling like you are losing the weight by year (as per your graph). I am in the process of losing 12 years of weight. If I thought about it in years in the first place, I might have been more mindful when I was gaining it. Congratulations - I know how hard it is and what is it like to just want it gone!

  12. As soon as I read your blog, I went to Loseit.com and saw that I had joined that site two years ago but never did anything with it. So now I've put in my first day of my plan to lose 20 pounds. I think this will be a success. Thanks for the inspiration!!
